I am taller than Willem Dafoe. I am also a more advanced tango dancer, but tonight that doesn’t matter. What matters is that despite being at one time Jesus Christ, another time a freaky psychiatrist married to a mentally devolving Charlotte Gainsbourg, and yet another time a blue speedo-clad German accented deck hand on the great ship Zissou, Willem Dafoe stands just a few inches below me....

Bobby Peru in Palermo
Willem Dafoe is starring in the late night tango movie of my life. He laughs his scary open mouthed laugh as he tosses back shots of a clear liquid with friends at a table and claps to the tuba tango band. Leaving the basement venue after 1 we wander cracked tile pavements and side streets with swaying Porteno tweeners. There must be something open we think so we go to the sound and the light...

Nowhere Fast
This could be Carter’s head. This is machined metal, not to be confused with Metal Machine Music. It’s going to be too heavy for his tiny little plastic+bamboo body, but damn does it look amazing. I even like the striped traces of the tool on its face.  Picked this up on one of seemingly many rainy rainy soggy-as-shite nights in the ghetto. Dude that did this for me put down the...

you've got everything now
Whirlwind of activity and new things since last I posted. To start off, Halloween was a blast as usual, me continuing to mine the deepest depths of my imagination to find ever-more obscure costumes. This time out I went for a homemade (second year in a row) kaiju/Ultraman fiend, Alien Zarab.  Mine was a little more Oaksterdam-Ninja: …but I like to think I did him justice....

mysterions
I am creating a Mysterious Object at Noon (all apologies to Apichatpong Weerasethakul, whose name I still have to google and cut and paste from the auto-spelling function). This object started showing up in the thumbnails I’ve been doing for the new book project, coming at times when the main character needed a boost or time-jump. Maybe I created it out of storytelling laziness; I...

how soon is now?
Comic Con 2010 was a great rush this year. With only a day to make an impression, the Carter costume was modded and re-born as the Carter Art-O-Mat. The mod allowed me to distribute schwag and create a quick impression on the floor. Fearing on the trip down I would have to slog it out with the booth babes outside, I was pleasantly surprised to find the get-up attracting attention and photos...

i've got the 21st century breathing down my neck
Time to bring things up; take stock; forge ahead. Below are a few models and illos I’ve been working on for the past month. Some familiar faces, some new characters. This will keep growing.

there is a light that never goes out
So many inspirations this weekend, and it feels that Spring has just begun in proper. Friday began with the Senior CCA Furniture show at Swarm gallery, to Saturday picking up the 3D print of a prototype I’m working on, to Sunday at the grand “31 hour” opening of the revamped Oakland Museum to Exit Through the Giftshop, Banksy’s film on art, life, what-have you.  ...

this post has nothing to do with design
Resurfacing after a long wet winter. Working on the prototype(s) and drawing on an almost-daily basis. So ok, maybe this post does have something to do with design; so be it. Getting out of my own head and finding inspiration in others, in the outside world, in movies, and in books.  I recently re-visited Stanley Kubrick’s Stephen King-panned The Shining. I don’t really know what...

so if you have five seconds to spare
The pressure to write something profound is what usually stops me from posting to this blog more often. As it is, I sometimes wonder if I use the interwebs to their full advantage, and then other times I just want to go hide in my shack and come out after I’ve spent a week with the Dremel and some foam (or wood, or paper-though Dremeling paper is probably a tough thing). As this will...

competition+art direction
Something that’s been nagging me lately is my lack of an art director for my work these days. I have only myself to show, to trust, to check on progress and move forward. I even thought about posting a facebook status that would be a cry out to that community for a virtual art director (lord knows that’s pretty much what I use facebook for these days). Speaking of art directors, Yves...

This entry was supposed to be all about the trip to DesignerCon in Pasadena and how illuminating and educational it was for our fledgling company. I suppose I can still write about that, but on the day of the Con I was waylaid by an errant swing and a near-concussion whilst playing with my buddy Mitch’s kids. Made it to the Con (mostly) intact, save a fat lip and nagging thoughts of...

engage and connect
Saturday night found us in the darkest depths of Contra Costa County, home to ancient memories and long stretches of nowhereland with a surprisingly crisp evening. The occasion was to support one of our friends who happens to sing Barbershop. Before our friends took to the stage however, we witnessed a rare all-female Barbershop group. At first it was just a pleasant surprise to see someone...

the plyboo has arrived+some thoughts on being the...
Yesterday the Plyboo arrived from the swell folks at Smith+Fong, makers of said Plyboo. I went about cutting the pieces (thin as paper) to fit the sketch model and now have the start of round two of the Carter prototype. For this iteration I’m adding grippy feet and hands and eyes made from sculpey. It will probably weigh a ton when I get done, but at least it will give me a better idea of...

you know where you came from you know where you're...
So let’s start at the top: here’s where we’ve left off with the Carter prototype. A crude, quickie sketch model made to show basic functionality (thanks Alison for the magnet suggestion). Carter has been a recurring character in the past couple of issues of Catholic Kate, and felt like a natural choice for my first 3D character. But how to differentiate from the oodles of vinyl...
